A Call for Sovereignty: Liberate Toussaint Louverture Airport
By Harry Pierre
PORT-AU-PRINCE – Today, my heart bleeds. Not out of weakness, but from a place of righteous and profound anger. As heirs to the world’s first Black Republic, we represent a people who shattered the chains of slavery to offer the light of freedom to all humanity. Yet, an embittering reality faces us: on our own soil, we are being treated as strangers.
A Symbol of National Humiliation
The current situation at Toussaint Louverture International Airport has become the mirror of our national humiliation. This site, which bears the name of the precursor of our independence, is now the target of an unprecedented outrage. The de facto government has taken the unacceptable decision to close our borders to our own citizens, our brothers and sisters in the diaspora, and our local merchants. Paradoxically, the runways remains wide open for the boots of foreign military forces.
Is this what sovereignty looks like? In what other country does a government bar its own population from its primary international gateway while welcoming foreign troops with open arms? Such a scenario is unheard of elsewhere. It is a direct insult to our flag, our history, and our dignity.
Haiti is Not a Playground
It is time to reaffirm a fundamental truth: Haiti is not a playground for foreign powers. We are not a transit zone for successive international missions that fail to bring lasting peace. We are a free and sovereign nation. The skies of Haiti belong to Haitians, and the soil of Haiti belongs to the children of this land.
In the face of this overreach, we demand:
1. The immediate reopening of Toussaint Louverture Airport for all civilian and public flights.
2. The withdrawal of military troops occupying this strategic space at the expense of the freedom of movement of the Haitian people.
3. Full respect for our right to travel freely throughout our own country.
A Cry for Dignity
We are not begging for a privilege; we are demanding our rights. Those in power must hear the cry of a people who refuse to be erased from their own territory.
The hour for national consciousness has arrived. For a Haiti that is proud, standing tall, and sovereign, we must remain mobilized.
Grenadiers, to the assault!
